Rheinsteig Stage 19: Johannisberg–Kiedrich (north–south)

If there’s any one hill that’s typically associated with wine here, then it’s the Johannisberg. The world-famous vineyard, crossed by the 50th degree of latitude, has been planted with Riesling grapes for centuries. A statue in the palace courtyard reminds us of the rider who in the autumn of 1775 returned too late with permission from the bishop of Fulda to begin the wine harvest.  The grapes had rotted – yet produced excellent wine the next spring. Thus late harvest or Spätlese wine was invented purely by chance!
