Excursion into the Underground of Traben-Trarbach

Traben-Trarbach · Mosel

At the turn of the twentieth century the town of Traben-Trarbach found itself at the heart of the world wine trade. It is indeed remarkable that, at the time, this Art Nouveau town on the banks of the Mosel was second only to the great French city of Bordeaux when it came to wine distribution.

The reason for its extraordinary status lay in the huge demand for Riesling wine and the export market, especially to Great Britain and overseas. This led to over 100 wineries being founded.

As a result, the capacity of Traben-Trarbach’s cellars was subject to considerable increase during the second half of the nineteenth century. Second to none on the Mosel, many vaults, some over 100 metres long, others multi-storey, were installed beneath a huge area of the town centre.
