Trifels Castle

Annweiler am Trifels · Pfalz

Trifels Castle, one of the most important imperial strongholds in the Staufer Empire, towers above the romantic little town of Annweiler.
The castle was founded by Salians who built a wooden and stone castle. The Staufers extended it to become a stately imperial castle and made it the treasury of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. It also gained prominence as a state prison for the English King Richard the Lionheart (1193–1194).

The castle and Schloßäcker car park can be reached by car or bus via Annweiler am Trifels and Trifelsstraße. On foot, you can reach Trifels via the hiking trails Annweiler Castle Trail ("Annweilerer Burgenweg"), Palatinate Wine Trail ("Pfälzer Weinsteig") and Monk's Trail ("Mönchsweg").
