Franzosenlay - Viewpoint on the Lahnwanderweg ( Lahn hiking trail)

Balduinstein · Lahntal

There are many vantage points along the Lahn from which you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the landscape. At particularly beautiful places that invite you to stay for a longer time, small pavilions have been erected that offer shelter from all kinds of weather. Many are equipped with benches all around and thus also allow for a relaxing break and a cosy picnic.

On Franzosenlay, in addition to the magnificent view and all the ingredients for a pleasant rest, there is one special feature that will leave you in awe: A Mediterranean plant has found its way to the Lahn and obviously feels extremely at home. The prickly pear cactus, an Optonia species, has been growing on the dry rocks high above the river for several years and even survives the wet, cold German winters. This exotic cactus thrives in the hard-to-reach rock below the viewing pavilion, is hardy and even bears fruit. Franzosenlay lies directly on the Lahn hiking trail.

In addition to everything you need for a hiking tour, you should also have a hiking passport in your rucksack. You can collect stamps and get a hiking certificate or take part in a small competition. The stamp station for the 16th stage of the Lahnwanderweg is located in the red wooden box directly in the viewing pavilion.
