The German Wine Gate in the southern Palatinate wine-growing community of Schweigen-Rechtenbach (Rhineland-Palatinate) has marked the start of the German Wine Route in the south since 1936. Its counterpart at the northern end of the Wine Route, 85 kilometres away, has been the House of the German Wine Route in Bockenheim since 1995.
In reference to the Palatinate landmark, the regional winegrowers' cooperative of the Palatinate, based in Ilbesheim near Landau, about 20 kilometres away, also calls itself the German Wine Gate.
