Welcome to the home of Riesling

The steep sloping vineyards and the Riesling wines of the Moselle are famous all over the world. But what exactly makes them so special? The Riesling grape is at home in the Moselle region and there is good reason for that – the slate soil found on the steepest slopes along the Moselle is rich in nutrients. It stores the heat from the sun really well, which, in combination with the mild climate along the Moselle, ensures optimum conditions for growth. The mineral-rich slate soil can genuinely be described as a natural treasure that is perfect for making award-winning Riesling wines.

If you need any more convincing, watch the Moselle winemakers working in the vineyards, some at inclines of over 30%. And, of course, no trip would be complete without a proper wine tasting, be it at the vineyard itself, in one of the rustic historical wine cellars or at one of the modern wine bars. Join one of the trained guides, some of whom are winemakers themselves, and enjoy a host of wine-related history and anecdotes along a walk, cycle trail or horse-drawn carriage ride.

Along the Moselle, Mother Nature has also created some fascinating sights, including the numerous meanders in the river, breathtakingly beautiful sweeping curves that no travel bucket list should be without. You get the best views of the Kröv and Wolf bend in the Moselle from up in the hilltops, from where you can admire the river as it snakes through the valley. Walks along the loveliest stages of the Moselsteig trail or one of the little walks leading off it, including the Kluckertspfad, Leiermannspfad and the Moseltalschanzen, take you through fantastic natural scenery.

A detour to Einkirch, Kröv or Reil, or any other of the charming Moselle villages with their narrow winding streets and half-timbered houses, is definitely worthwhile and, while you’re at it, a visit to a local wine bar is an absolute must. Another top tip for culture lovers is the art nouveau town of Traben-Trarbach, complete with impressive art nouveau villas and a network of underground cellars. Have you heard of Succellus, for example? He was the Gallo-Roman god of winemakers and coopers, and you can meet him in Kinheim. And what about the Counts Palatine and the devil of Reil? Not forgetting the local wine royalty.
