Upper Middle Rhine Valley: Love at first, second and third sight

It looks as if they’re flirting with each other: the water, the vines and the castles in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Unesco world heritage site between Bingen and Koblenz makes up only around five per cent of the entire course of the river, but is often described as the most beautiful section of the Rhine between the Alps and the North Sea. Here you can experience the enchanting effect of pure Rhine romanticism in the heart of Europe.

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is one of Europe’s oldest and most beautiful cultural landscapes. Historically and scenically a treasure that is over 2,000 years old, it is shrouded in fabulous stories and wild romance. It has drawn poets, artists and musicians from all over the world – the English painter JMW Turner, the French writer Victor Hugo – as well as Heinrich Heine with his famous poetic version of the Loreley song. Inspired by one of Germany’s most famous rock formations, the Loreley rock, which rises over 132 metres into the sky on the right bank of the Rhine at the kilometre 555 mark. Enjoy the romantic views of the vine-covered valley slopes, over 40 fortresses and castles, beautiful shorelines and fairy-tale locations between the steep rocky scenery.
