Palatinate Forest: The three ultimate golden moments: forest, hiking and wine

Not seeing the forest for the trees – that can soon happen to you in Germany’s largest contiguous forest area. Over 12,000 kilometres of hiking trails pass through the forest. The biosphere reserve protected by Unesco provides many treasures you’ll be keen to discover. There are also impressive castles and ruins as well as culinary highlights along the way. Whether by yourself, with friends or the whole family – this is where everyone will find their route to happiness.

You don’t need much for your path to happiness – rugged boots, some victuals in your backpack and off you go! The well-signposted hiking trails take you through extensive pine forests, past fresh streams, gorges, hikers’ huts and attractive villages with lots of options to take a break. While you can explore the large chestnut groves on pleasantly shaded paths in the east of the biosphere reserve, the Dahner Felsenland awaits you in the south close to the border with France. Its monumental sandstone towers and cliffs are up to 70 metres high, which display an incredible interplay of colours depending on the time of the day and are greatly appreciated by rock climbers. What better setting for a hiking or mountain bike tour? If you value culture and history more, you'll certainly be inspired by the many castles and ruins in the region. Trifels Castle, Berwartstein Castle and Hambach Castle attract large numbers of visitors every year. At the end of the day, you can look back on your experiences with some delicious regional specialities and a good glass of wine from the local region.
