Get rid of sniffles with brine, salt and saunas

During the cooler months when everyone is coughing and sniffling, everything ‘Emser’ promises some kind of relief. More specifically, the Emser salt and the waters of the Emser Kränchen, which was the favourite spring of Kaiser Wilhelm I, who regularly took the waters in Bad Ems.

It is its salt content that makes the water in Bad Ems so special. The generous spa complex is fed by Ems mineral water. Treatments include hot stone massage, hammam and the ‘Kaiser pool’ for one or two people. A river sauna floats on the Lahn and can be reached via a jetty from the Emser Therme.

Bad Bertrich sits between the volcanic Eifel and the Moselle in the Üssbach valley. Along with Karlsbad, the Vulkaneifel Therme is among the only state-accredited Glauber’s salt spas in Europe. The naturally warm spring water comes from volcanic soils and feeds the thermal spa. The warmth and lightness of the water have a beneficial effect, relieving pain and stress.

As the gentle music plays, the sun gradually rises between the Palatinate Forest and the vineyards, the white sand trickles gently through your fingers and there’s a lovely feeling of warmth all around. The little beach can be found in the middle of Bad Bergzabern, in the sand and light baths of the Südpfalz Therme. There, and in the salt caves, it is as relaxing as being by the sea. Warm water at 23 degrees bubbles out from the rocks deep below in the Petronella spring. Heated to a comfortable 32 degrees, it bubbles in the large pool under the spa’s mirrored ceiling. A salt bath in the golden Karolinenwanne pool is also an enticing prospect.

The healing power of salt is evident everywhere in Bad Kreuznach. The Salinental region, also called the largest open-air inhalatorium in Europe, gets its name from the salt extracted from the brine springs. The 10-metre graduation works are more than one kilometre long. The brine trickles through the blackthorn hedge walls to form a fresh salty mist.

The comfortable warmth and Mediterranean flair of the crucenia thermen in Bad Kreuznach, combined with the views over the greenery and the shimmering red sandstone cliffs of the Nahe valley, are a pleasure at any time of year. You can relax as you bathe in the four circular pools, float in one of the two large brine baths at 32 degrees or swim a couple of laps of the freshwater pool. The water has a constant temperature of 33 degrees. The crucenia salt caves harness the healing powers of the Dead Sea. Bad Kreuznach is also home to the first mercury tunnel in the world, from which mercury was extracted for pain-relieving radon therapy.
