On the second weekend in May, everything in the "Secret Capital of Rheinhessen" revolves around Georg Scheu, the famous citizen and head of the local vine breeding facility from 1909 to 1947.
Already since the year 2000, the city, together with partners, annually awards the coveted wine culture prize, also called Georg Scheu plaque or Scheu prize for short. For the 100th "birthday" of the Scheurebe, the initiative for a wine award was started in time for the anniversary year 2016, in which wines from the Scheurebe were to be in the spotlight and awarded. The specialist publisher Dr. Fraund in Mainz, with its editorial teams of the magazines "WEIN+MARKT" and "Das Deutsche Weinmagazin" subsequently launched the Scheurebe Award. In addition to the award ceremony and wine tasting to taste the winning wines, a convivial wine festival with many other Scheurebe wines to taste, regional delicacies and musical stage program will take place around the Alzey town hall.
