Hildegard von Bingen and Friedrich Barbarossa - facts and fictions. Special exhibition in the Museum am Strom from September 18, 2020 - October 31, 2021 The holy prophetess and the legendary emperor: Hildegard von Bingen and Friedrich Barbarossa are among the celebrities of the high Middle Ages who - especially since the romanticism of the 19th century - have repeatedly occupied the imagination of people. Accordingly, since then, it has been painted over and over again how the encounter between these two “superstars” of the 12th century, which probably took place in 1163 in Ingelheim, could have happened. And soon afterwards, the two must have met again, which has so far largely remained unnoticed in research and legend formation ... With original documents and elaborate graphic presentations, the exhibition breathes new life into the encounters between Hildegard and Barbarossa - and at the same time documents the numerous imaginative projections that have been dedicated to the subject over and over again for two centuries. At the same time, on the basis of the latest historical scientific findings, it is shown in which historical contexts the mysterious relationship between the prophetess and the emperor actually developed its effect in the “great” politics of the 12th century.
