Rationalisation, mechanisation and industrialisation in the Diez region, 1871 to 1914

Special exhibition in the Museum im Grafenschloß

After the foundation of the German Empire in 1871, the rationalisation and industrialisation of the world of work also arrived in the Diez region. Even before that, trade and industry had been well developed, but had mostly still worked with methods of handicraft and manufactory production. Thus the industrial revolution began primarily as a retrofitting of existing factories with steam engines. Many of these plants were still located in residential areas. However, the new production and transport possibilities and cheap capital also provided the conditions for the establishment of factories. Within a few years, Diez, Freiendiez, Heistenbach and Limburg became sites of larger factories for the production of such diverse things as lime, construction machinery, paint, noodles, chairs and soap.

With never-before-seen plans, photos and objects, the exhibition shows how industrialisation took hold of our region within just a few years.

The exhibition will be opened with a lecture on Saturday, 2 October at 19:00.
